First, Thelma, I love seeing the beautiful smiles and happiness in the two photos you posted. Mom Shelton truly must have been a blessing in your life, as well as, in the lives of your children.
Bill, sorry to hear of your heartache and sadness in saying goodbye to your Mom. Even though she had a long life, I'm sure you still wish you could of had her longer. Here lies the beauty of being a Christian. Her arms will be open to hug you when your time comes to rest in eternal peace. How blessed you were to have had her here on earth to give you life, love and family. And now how blessed to know that she has gone home to prepare a place for you again.

Alma and Tom were two of the first people my husband (Don) and I met when we arrived at ARC and moved onto the 8th Floor in 2009.  We were temporary there as we waited for another apartment, but they were ever friendly and sweet whenever we had a chance meeting. Alma was ready to present us with a welcome bread loaf and always her genuine and sweet smile. She will be well received in Heaven. God bless you, Tom.

Alma was a sweet, friendly lady.  I enjoyed talking with her and Tom at Games Day and ROOTS at the Windcrest United Methodist Church.

Alma was a wonderful woman, and one of my mother’s (Mary Klein’s) best friends. She was always thoughtful, and did everything she could to help people. I stopped going to Universal City when I moved Mom to assisted living in Houston, and we both missed Alma and Tom terribly. I pray that Tom is doing well.

Alma (and Tom) were constant sources of friendship and support for my parents (Mary and Don Klein), over the years through military family, and especially for my mother after Daddy died. Their love and friendship were truly special and cherished!  We would never visit without getting a visit from them. Alma will be sorely missed!  

Alma, was always so kind and considerate. I remember when our son Jacob was learning to read and having a hard time at school. Alma bought him several readers so he could practice at home. Through her efforts he came to love reading.  
We will treasure our visits to San Antonio, sharing a meal and great conversation, we will miss her.

Mom Shelton’s Legacy—The William Thomas  (Bill) Shelton Jr Family

I have a special memory to share of Mom Shelton when she welcomed me to the family.  She told me I could call her and her husband Tom and Alma if I wished to.  I then asked her if I could call them Mom Shelton and Dad Shelton since my own parents had passed.  I’ll never forget her beautiful kind eyes as she told me they would be honored for me to do so.  In all the years since, my daughters, grandchildren and great granddaughter enjoyed nothing but love and affection from them.  Mom Shelton was the original “Leave It To Beaver “ kind of mom to her husband and her boys.  Thanks to her I have a wonderful, kind and loving husband.  Thank you Mom Shelton.

Alma was my "big little" sister--"little"because she was a beautiful petite lovely person, "big" because she was my older sister!   This is not a personal memory, but one that was told to me by our parents.  On the day I was born (at our home where all of our parents' five children were born), Alma was a senior in high school and got on the school bus to go to school.   She knew I was on the way and when she returned home from school that day, I had arrived!   Mother told her that the doctor had  said, "a little lady" when I was born.  All of my life, "lady" was the special nickname that Alma had for me.  Further, when she and Tom were married, I was the 5 year old ring bearer. Supposedly, when I was walking down the aisle, I stopped, turned around and looked back to say, "Alma, are you coming?"

Personal memories wash over me as the wonderful  "sister-mom" who always had my best interests in her heart.  Through the years, I traveled to many of the places she and Tom  lived and was able to see the gracious lady she always was.   She  was  the caretaker of her home and faithfully looked after all their family.    Alma was always the caring and loving "lady".  She never forgot her "southern charm" and would always  to say to me, "Lady, it's so nice to see you", even in her illness, when other conversation was almost non-existent.  Her Christian beliefs help me in my grieving because I know where she is and she is at peace.


I had the privilege of calling this wonderful woman my aunt. My Aunt Alma was  my favorite aunt.  I always remember her having her fingernails painted a pretty red every time I saw her, which is something that is memorable as a young girl. I will always remember her sweet smile and the way she made everyone including me so special when you were with her. Uncle Tom, Bill and John thinking of each of you during this time. I know she is in Heaven with red nails showing everyone her sweet Southern charm! 

She taught us many lessons in her kind Love. 

Alma will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 74 years, Colonel (Ret) William Thomas (Tom) Shelton of Yanceyville, NC and by sons Bill (Thelma), John (Vicki), along with step granddaughters Genevieve &amp; Vanessa (Jose). Alma will also be fondly remembered by her four grandchildren, Amanda (Kevin), Spencer, Jessica &amp; Skyler and three great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Alma is also survived by her brother William Cecil Simmons &amp; sister Jean Haislip Clay (Danny).
Alma was preceded in death by both her Father and Mother as well as siblings Doris Simmons and James Simmons and her sister-in-law Victoria (Griessl), wife of her brother Cecil.
