Ruth (Streimikis) Kranetz passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024, at the age of 103. She was born in Rochdale, Massachusetts on February 10, 1921. She grew up on a dairy farm with her brothers, Albert and George, and her sister, Helen. During World War II, Ruth put her hands to the war effort, working at Stafford Laboratories, proof-reading bandages and medical supplies.
She met Louis Kranetz in 1944, while on vacation in Vermont, and they began a love story which spanned more than seven decades, lasting until his death in 2017. They married in 1946, and had 2 daughters, Margaret (Gerald Mader) and Judith. They were proud grandparents of Adam, David, Emily and Alexi and great-grandparents of 5. They were truly best friends and were inseparable – an example of enduring love.
Ruth loved being a homemaker, and there was always plenty of love and laughter at family gatherings. Above all else, she was most proud of her garden – a brightly-colored medley of flowers of all types, where she happily spent hours, coaxing blooms in every corner.
In the late 1960s, at the height of the Women’s Movement, Ruth decided to finally go to college at Newark State Teacher’s College (Kean University). Semester after semester, year after year, one class at a time, she studied. She graduated with honors in 1973, with a degree in Early Childhood Education.
In remembrance of Ruth, please remember the small joys in life – feeling the warmth of the sun, listening to the laughter of children and always taking the time to smell the flowers.
