Somerton St. Ann, Jamaica. She was the fourth child of their seven children. Her early childhood
education began at Somerton Basic School and Gibraltar Primary School. She advanced with great ease toBrowns Town Secondary School and then St. Hilda’s High School.
Ruth’s educational quest was deferred after the births of her two sons. She became a young
mother at the age of 18 and 20, giving birth to David and Rhow. The boys became the fuel for her burning
desire to achieve more. She was determined to continue her education so that she could provide her boys
with a better life. At this point, she decided to attend college. In September of 1980, Ruth was a proud
member of the first-year students at Church Teachers College: Mandeville, Jamaica. She studied
Secondary Education specializing in Mathematics and Science. After graduating from college, she went
on to teach for four and a half years at Montego Bay Secondary School. In her continued pursuit to give
her boys a better life, she began to set her sights on immigrating to the United States of America. This
dream came true in January of 1987.
She initially traveled to Florida to join her older sister Gen. Shortly after that, she was whisked
away by the love of her life, Beresford Hall (Burger) to Brooklyn, New York. They married on December
23, 1987, and moved to Orange, New Jersey. Ruth then gave birth to the couple’s beautiful daughter,
Jodie, in 1988. After Jodie’s birth and the arrival of her sons, they moved to their current residence in
Union, New Jersey. She found employment with New York Life where she worked for 30 years until her
passing. She worked as a Senior Specialist Contracting and Licensing Support. Ruth loved her job and her
colleagues. Ruth was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and was a member of the Metropolitan
Baptist Church.
Ruth left us on January 18, 2019, while sleeping peacefully at her residence in Union, New
Jersey. She was only 61 years old, (God was in control). Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her
husband of 31 years, Beresford Hall, and her children Rhow, Jodie and David. Ruth will also be fondly
remembered by her seven grandchildren: Christian, Tyler, Aliyah, Alissa, Rochelle, Roshane, and Justine.
Six siblings: Beachie, Raymond, Jimmy, Gen, Eli, and Sonia. As well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and a
host of friends. She will be deeply missed! She was compassionate, caring and most importantly
unselfish. A love as powerful as our mothers will leave its own mark and give us protection forever. I
know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to live through us in
every act, thought, and decision we make. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched
by having shared her love. My mother had a huge heart that everyone found joy and comfort in. When
you speak of her, speak not with tears, for thoughts of her should not be sad. Let the memories of the
times you shared give you comfort, for her life was rich because of you.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday 9:30-11:00 am at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 149 Springfield Ave., Newark. Funeral Service to immediately follow. Interment: Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery, Union.
