Manny was a gentle man and a gentleman. He was born 76 years ago in the Ironbound (Down Neck) section of Newark, where he attended Lafayette Street School and East Side High School (Class of ’63). He left Newark when he married his high school sweetheart Kathryn (Kathy) DeTulio 54 years ago.
Manny leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Kathryn, two precious daughters (Daddy’s girls) and outstanding sons-in-law: Erica Lynn Wittel and Ken Wittel; Cheryl Lynn Trapani and Joseph Francis Trapani III. He also leaves treasured memories and secrets to the lights of his life, his grandsons Joseph Francis Cid Trapani IV and Andrew Cid Manuel Trapani. Manny was also the doting uncle of his dear niece Leann DeTulio and Godfather to Albert LoBiondo. Manny was a loving cousin to Josephine Lopez, Mercedes (Nena) Lopez (deceased), Christa Grote, and Karen Barrera (deceased). From the time he met Kathryn, Manny became nephew and cousin to all the DeTulio and Coppola family members. Lifelong friends became part of his family as well.
Manny was the son of Josefina and Jose Cid of Ferry Street, Newark, NJ; the nephew of Mercedes and Jose Lopez (Tia and Tio), and Jenny and Michael Barrera, (all deceased). Manny told many wonderful stories about holidays and time spent with his family. He always talked about how much he enjoyed spending time with Tia eating ice cream after school every day, Nena’s and Josie’s tutoring him and trying to teach him spelling. To both Tia and Tio he was always grateful for their instilling in him his love of cooking, especially paella. After Manny’s mother passed away when Manny was nine years old, his Aunt Jenny and Uncle Mickey moved to the apartment upstairs from Manny and his dad. He spent his time home traveling between his own apartment and Jenny and Mickey’s. Manny also grew up with their daughter Christa. I am sure there are stories there that have not been shared.
Manny will always be remembered for his wry sense of humor and for being a good, kind man.
May his memory forever be a blessing.
