Elizabeth, Jamaica. Betty was the seventh child of nine children born to Ehud and Violet Sellars.
Her childhood was spent helping to raise coffee and other crops and taking care of the animals,
and of course attending school and church, typical of the lifestyle in Jamaica in those days.
After successfully passing the Jamaica Local Examination she taught for a brief period before
deciding to pursue a career in nursing and enrolled in nursing school at Kingston Public Hospital.
After graduating from nursing school, she went to work at Black River Hospital. While working
there, she was recruited for a nursing job in the Bahamas which she accepted. She worked in the
Bahamas for four years then migrated to New York City. In the late 1970s, she settled in New
Jersey with her husband Oznie Warren and had three sons, Andrew, Maxwell and Devon. She
had a successful nursing career, providing care in hospitals in New Jersey such as Alexian
Brothers, even serving as nursing supervisor of neurology at that institution. After spending some
time in Florida from 1998 to 2015, she returned to New Jersey in 2015 to be close to her family,
especially her grandchildren, Jovon, Joli, Sam, Uriah and Miles.
Throughout her life, Betty was in close contact with her siblings; her sisters Clarnet, Evelyn,
Sadie, Elitte and Dawn and her brothers Nunez, Mike and Dan. She became a second mother to
their children and grandchildren. She would regularly return to Jamaica to visit her childhood
home and travel to spend some time with her siblings and friends whenever possible. Whenever
she would return to the US, she would be sure to bring back some of her favorite dishes fish,
guava jelly and coffee and of course the spirit of Jamaica.
Betty was a caring person and known to take time to care for others such as her aunt. Betty loved
to read, garden and spend time with family friends and could be heard joyfully humming
throughout the day. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.
