Dorothy Evelyn Jiaconi, 105, passed away on Friday December 1, 2017 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law. A visitation will be held at McCracken Funeral Home 1500 Morris Avenue Union, NJ, on Monday December 11, 2017 from 11-12 noon followed by a prayer service at noon. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery Newark, NJ.
Dorothy was born in Chicago, IL to Winifred (nee Scanlon) Burns and William H. Burns. She was the third of the Burns children and lived most of her adult life in Union and Forked River, NJ. She moved to Greensboro, GA in 2007. Dorothy had one brother, Henry Burns, and a sister Helen Reynolds, both of whom preceded her in death.
As a very young girl, Dorothy and her siblings lived with relatives in Painted Post, NY and Susquehanna, Pennsylvania until her father remarried and then moved the family to NJ.
In her teens, Dorothy began her working career as a Long Distance Telephone Operator for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. She left in 1946 to become a stay at home mom in 1946, and returned to work in 1960 as a Switchboard Operator for various private companies; eventually retiring in December of 1984 from MidLantic Mortgage in Newark, NJ.
In the early 1930's while attending a church dance she met Joseph A. Jiaconia who was working for the Prudential Insurance Company. Their courtship began shortly thereafter and they eventually married on September 23, 1934 in Newark, NJ.
Joe and Dot (as she was referred to by many relatives) initially rented an apartment and lived in Irvington, NJ until they purchased their first home in Union, NJ in 1940. Dorothy was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and wonderful homemaker who loved to cook and bake. Once retired, she enjoyed reading, knitting and playing a small number of board games.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph, who passed away in February, 1991.Dorothy is survived by her son Robert and his wife, Mary Ann, of Greensboro, GA., her granddaughter, Meredith Loman and her husband Eric of Eatontown, NJ, a grandson Brandon Jiaconia of Brooklyn, NY and her great granddaughter Lila Evelyn Loman also of Eatontown, NJ.
