James was born in New York City on April 15,1943 to Francis Dalton and Grace Whalen. James grew up in Hell’s Kitchen running through fire hydrants and playing stickball in the Greyhound bus lot. In 1960 at age 17 James followed his calling and joined the Navy.. James was often found sharing his love of the Navy with stories of being at sea and all of his visits to countries near and far throughout his service. James continued his life in service by joining the Weehawken Police Department as an officer until his retirement. Weehawken was his home, James served the community as a Police Officer, Director of Parks, President of the Little League where he was an admired coach to many and most memorable as a friend. James had an infectious smile and always went the extra mile to help everyone, friend or stranger. In addition to his love of history, movies, and travel, in particular his annual family vacations, there was his New York Mets!
James had great respect for his choices in community service as a career but his pride and joy came from his family. James was preceded in death by the mother of his children Elizabeth Ann Dalton (nee McElroy), his loving parents Francis and Grace Dalton (nee Whalen), and his older brother Francis Dalton. James is survived by his four adult children: Lori Dalton Massie and her husband Charles of Allendale, NJ; James Dalton of Allendale NJ; Stacy Bodtmann of Butler NJ; Robert Dalton and his husband Cordis of Houston TX. James had three grandchildren which he adored: Michael Bodtmann Jr; Nicholas Bodtmann and his fiancé Victoria Woods and Lily Grace Massie. His two sisters, Joan ( Tino ) and Margaret (David) along with many beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. James will be missed by all whose lives he touched. The world was a better place with him in it.
