Filomena Matteis, 81, peacefully passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Castelvetere sul Calore, Avellino, Italy on March 25, 1942 to the late Salvatore and Giovanna Matteis. In 1962, she married her cherished husband Valentino, whom she was married to for 57 years, and relocated to the United States where she was a longtime resident of Union City, New Jersey.
Filomena worked in the embroidery and textile industry alongside her husband. She later worked for over 25 years as a member of the custodial staff at Robert Waters School in Union City. She loved to cook and had many culinary specialities, including her famous tiramisu that was a family favorite. Filomena also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crochet and shared her handiwork with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Filomena was a caring, nurturing, and loving person.
Filomena is predeceased by her husband Valentino. Filomena is survived by her loving daughter Mariagiovanna and her husband Vincenzo and loving son Salvatore and his wife Barbara. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Gabriella and her husband Christopher, Vincenza and her husband Julian, Valentina, and Salvatore. Filomena is also survived by two great grandchildren and her sister Rosetta Follo and family.
Filomena’s Celebration of Life will include a visitation on Sunday, October 15, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Boulevard, Union City, New Jersey 07087. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at SS Joseph & Michael Roman Catholic Church, 1314 Central Avenue, Union City, New Jersey 07087. Family and friends may begin gathering at 9:30 a.m. on October 16 at the Leber Funeral Home before the funeral services. Filomena will be laid to rest at Flower Hill Cemetery, 5433 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, North Bergen, New Jersey 07047.
