Genevieve Alice “Gen” Plumstead, 90, Noank Native, of Uncasville, CT passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 24th. She was born on September 22, 1925 in Noank, CT where she was raised. She was the daughter of the late William U. and Jessie Carson Plumstead. Gen graduated from Robert E. Fitch High School, Class of 1943.
Gen went to work for Southern New England Telephone (SNET) before graduating high school and worked as a switchboard operator during WWII. She remained at SNET and retired after 43 years in 1985. She was an avid bowler and for many years competed as a member of the SNET bowling team for which she won many trophies. She loved to bake and tried all kinds of crafts as well. Gen was fond of knitting sweaters for family and discovered cross stitch and plastic canvas in her 70’s. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a lifelong member of the SNET Pioneers.
Gen was a member of St. Mary’s Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton as well as a lector and communicant there. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Ten years ago she moved to Uncasville and she was a member and communicant of St. John’s Church, Montville. Gen loved to travel and traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada. She was an avid sports fan whose loyalty was to the UConn Women’s Basketball Team and the Boston Celtics.
She is survived by her sister Catherine P. Avery of Uncasville and also two nieces and a nephew, Victoria L. Avery of Alexandria, VA, Michele L. Avery of Uncasville, CT and Michael W. Avery, of Hampton Bays, NY. Also surviving Gen are her niece-in-law Pamela Bonanno of Uncasville, CT and cousin Kay Patterson of Mystic, CT, as well as other extended family and friends.
She was predeceased by her brother, William F. Plumstead, brother-in-law Frederick H. Avery Sr. and nephew Frederick H. Avery, Jr.
Calling hours will be held at Montville’s Church and Allen Funeral Home TODAY Feb.25,2016 from 4:00-6:00p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John’s Church in Montville, on Friday Feb.26,2016 at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow at St. Patricks Cemetery Mystic.
