Services for Thomas William “Tom” Brogan, 80, of Tyler will be at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Lloyd James Funeral Chapel with Dr. Stuart Baskin officiating. Burial is at Dallas/Fort Worth Cemetery on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:15 A.M., under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral chapel.
Tom was born May 2, 1930 to Harriet and Tyler Brogan in Los Angeles, California and passed away July 13, 2010 in Tyler, Texas. Tom grew up in Michigan. He was a star football and basketball player in high school in Michigan. He then played football for Michigan State and the University of Hawaii. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity an association he shared with his son-in law Craig and his grandson Ryan both of Texas Christian University.
He married Ellee Brogan in 1953. Tom spent 20 years in the service of his country as an officer in the United States Army retiring as a Lt. Colonel. His assignments included serving with the 10th Special Forces/Russian Team as well as two tours in Vietnam. He first tour was as an advisor to a Vietnamese Regiment and the second as the Commander of an Infantry Battalion. He was the Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion 48th Infantry, Gelnhausen, Germany. He coined the battalion motto “Blood and Guts” which is still in use today! While on active duty he was awarded many awards including the Bronze Star with a V for Valor and 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Was a Master Parachutist and earned a Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Tom was a volunteer for 18 years for the Ministry-Meals on Wheels in Tyler. He got to know and love many people on his weekly route. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge/Howell, Michigan. He also loved the sport of golf and was a member of Willow Brook Country Club for 26 years. He enjoyed many happy hours on the golf course with his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Eleanor Brogan/Tyler and two children-daughter-Lisa Stoudt and husband Craig/Plano and their children his grandchildren Kara Stoudt/Ft. Worth and Ryan Stoudt/Dallas and son-Tim Brogan and wife Debby/Houston and their daughter his granddaughter Elizabeth Bozeman/Katy.
He was proceeded in death by his parents Harriett and Tyler Brogan of Okemos, Michigan.
