Sam grew up in the small community of River Hill, near Carthage, Texas and graduated from Carthage High School in 1962. At age 16, Sam began his first job as a sacker at a small grocery store called Pac n Sac to help support his large family after his dad passed. There, he advanced quickly into market management. Skills he learned and his ability to connect & show love to people as well as his work ethic helped to elevate him into market management positions of some large grocery chains. The first being Safeway for 20 plus years. Others included Food Lion and Brookshires. Sam also served seven years in the Texas Army National Guard. Following retirement, he began driving cars for Enterprise Rent-A-Car where he continued to meet and make many new friends everywhere he went.
Sam is survived by his loving wife: Wanda Muse Evans of 58 years, his daughter, Tammy Evans Gray (Shawn Winn): two grandchildren: Shelbi Gray Kalinec (Clint Kalinec), Connor Gray and one great-grandchild on the way, Everett James Kalinec: three siblings: Robbie Evans (Joy Evans), Nell Evans Jernigan, Brenda Evans Hutto & Brother-in-law, Merl (Bubba) Muse (Gail Muse).
Sam is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings: Frankie & Francis Evans, Ovid Evans, Dale Evans, Jimmy Evans, Dennis Evans, Margie Evans Barrington and brothers-in-law: Terry Muse, Fay Jernigan, Bob Barrington, & Bill Hutto, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly.
Sam served as an ordained deacon of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Tyler, TX for many years. He was an avid sports fan of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs, especially Patrick Mahomes. Jim Reeves was his utmost favorite country music artist.
A service to celebrate Sam Evans will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Lloyd James Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Hickman and Rev. Sherman Mayfield officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday one hour prior to service.
