She was born to Oren and Julia Johnson in Comfrey, MN in a small wooden farmhouse. As a teenager, she and her brother, Harold, enjoyed roller skating. They skated to the latest 1940’s musical hits and were the synchronized roller-skating champs of Sleepy Eye, MN.
At the age of 16, she graduated from high school and opened up Jane’s Fashions, a lady’s and children’s boutique in Hector, MN. A few years later, she was a bookkeeper at Johnson Hardware in Hector where she met her future husband, Garner. They were married in October of 1952. She had just turned 19 and he was 23, a sergeant fresh out of the Air Force. Seven years later they moved to Tyler, Texas.
Jane was born a Johnson, bookkeeper for Johnson Hardware, married a Johnson and was bookkeeper for Johnson Aviation. You could say that she was a Johnson thru and thru. The only job she had that wasn’t associated with her name was when she worked at the Honey Tree, a health food store, in Tyler.
Doing puzzles and playing board games with family and friends brought her much enjoyment as well as being outdoors and especially working in her own backyard.
Jane was a strong and faithful wife, loving mother and businesswoman. The foundation for Jane’s strength and endurance was her faith in Jesus. The way she lived her life reflected her faith. She was an active member at her church. She enjoyed being a greeter for her Sunday school class and always had a welcoming smile.
In her 60’s, she memorized most of John chapter 1 and could quote it without missing a single King James Version word. She said the King James was easier to memorize.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Randy and wife Beverly of Castle Rock, CO, Rhonda Bass and her husband David of Tyler, Rex and his wife Cynthia of Tyler, Roxanne Benton of Tyler, and Rodney and his wife Julie of Tyler; grandchildren Matthew Benton and his wife Shannon, Bethany Joyce and her husband Kyle, Chris Johnson, Michael Benton and his wife Melissa, Megan Benton, Katelyn Herrera and her husband Brian, Julia Austin, Alaina Peacock and her husband Ben and 14 great grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed by her faithful canine companion, Chip.
She was preceded in death by her loyal husband, Garner, of 33 years, grandson Alex Johnson and brother, Harold Johnson, of Elbow Lake, MN.
