Marie Geraldine “Geri” Newman passed away on January 3, 2016, in Tyler, where she was a resident of Reunion Plaza. She was born May 12, 1913 in Teague to Edward Franklin and Cora Perkins Baldwin, living the majority of her life on her beloved Mulberry Lane in Bellaire, Texas. Her spirit will be remembered by an extended family of relations, neighbors and friends from every walk of life. Geri had a zest for life and a love of people that never diminished in her 102 years. She taught us many things: eat plenty of avocados and mushrooms, drink milk every day, adopt someone at least once a week, go to the casino wearing your most colorful hat, play on their money always, and celebrate your winnings with a Bailey’ Irish cream. Geri enjoyed British comedies, annual trifle parties, gardening, a Papacitas enchilada every Saturday night, travels near and afar, and art classes with her close friends for many years. She once worked for the Mayor of Houston, attended St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and looked after all the stray animals that crossed her path. After moving to Tyler, Geri joined Highland Presbyterian Church, where she was graciously accepted. Marie Geraldine Newman was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Frank Newman. Among her survivors are sister-in-law, Barbara Cooper; brother-in-law, Willie Cooper; niece, Lunn McCabe and nephew, Duane Cooper. Special thanks to her many friends that were always there for her, also to a very special group at Reunion Plaza where Geri spent her last two years with outstanding care and compassion. Mrs. Newman’s remains will be taken to Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas for interment beside her husband at 11:00am on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
