Dorothy Alice Woods, age 92, of Tyler, passed away in the mid-morning hours of Friday, February 22, 2013 at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. She was born on December 10, 1920 in Winnsboro, Texas to H. Grady and Edyth Minick Barnett; they preceded her in death. Dorothy’s family moved to Alba, Texas when she was just 4 years old. She attended the Alba Schools where she graduated as salutatorian of her class in 1937. Following high school, Dorothy attended East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce where she graduated in 1942. Dorothy worked for 31 years in education, first in Alba-Golden and later in Tyler. After retirement, Dorothy worked for many years side by side with her husband at C. Woods Company in Tyler. Dorothy was an active member of West Erwin Church of Christ and a frequent volunteer at the Benevolent Center.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Maxine Smith Ray, and husband Rick, of Whitehouse, Carey Woods, and wife Monica, of Tyler, and Marion Krug, and husband Jeff, of California; and by a special niece, Kay Pope, and husband Billy, of Waxahachie. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by two husbands, Eldon M. Smith and Carey Woods, a daughter, Nancy Posey, a granddaughter, Kara Parker, a great-grandson, Dillon Scott McElhaney, and by one brother, Roy Barnett.
Services for Dorothy Alice Woods will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, February 25, 2013 at West Erwin Church of Christ with Jason Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in Alba with Noe Cedillo, Melvin Crow, Will Duran, Ron Lott, Carey Woods III, and Chip Woods serving as pallbearers. A visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M., Sunday afternoon at Lloyd James Funeral Home.
