David Erskine Ingram, age 89, of Chandler, Texas passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023. He was born on Sunday, July 30th, 1933, second of two sons to Myrtie Lee Reel and William Edgar Ingram in their home in Van Zandt County, Texas.
David attended grade school in Edom and then graduated from high school in Van, TX. He married Thelma Janette Williamson, whom he met at the West Erwin Church of Christ in Tyler, TX. In life and in death, they were inseparable. He soon was drafted into the US Army and proudly served during the Korean War. After serving, he enrolled in Abilene Christian College in order to enter the ministry, graduating in 1960. He did this in four years while working full-time to support his family, at the time Elizabeth, Patti, and David Jr. Son Tim was born after graduation.
After graduation, he served churches in Brownwood, Mt. Vernon, Longview, Lake Jackson, Daingerfield, Madisonville, San Angelo, Avery and Chandler, all in Texas. In 1976, he, Janette and the boys moved to Brazil where they served five years in Belo Horizonte, and adopted their fifth child Liliane. Then, after the breakup of the Soviet Union, David and Janette moved to Donetsk, Ukraine, to establish and mature churches there.
During his ministry he preached, taught bible classes, preached in gospel meetings, organized and participated in campaigns, two of those in Malaysia. Some of his best ministry was because of his pastoral gifts. Anyone who was sick at home, in the hospital, grieving, receiving a new baby or just needing support could count on a visit from David (usually accompanied by Janette). Many times David would go visit members in their workplaces, helping do things like shear sheep, or dig sweet potatoes.
David also served in the community as police chaplain, volunteer fireman and even Santa Claus (shhh!) at schools and in parades. He was very proud of his service in the community, and continued serving as first responder into his seventies.
David also was devoted to his family and was so proud of all their accomplishments, and especially the grandkids and great-grandkids. Every year he would write a “Christmas Letter” and update all their friends about what each of his descendants was doing.
David was preceded in death by his dear wife, Janette, by just 15 days after almost 71 years of marriage; his parents; his brother, Billie and sister-in-law, Norene Ingram; and two grandchildren, Jeff Fisher and Kaci Pollard.
David is survived by his loving children, Elizabeth and husband, Richy Pollard of Idabel, OK; Patti and husband, Bob Sliter of Edom, TX; David Jr. and Babí of San Angelo, TX; Tim and Julie Ingram of Lindale, TX, and Liliane Ingram of Lakewood Village, TX. Also 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
It would be impossible for the family to express our gratitude for all the prayers, cards, phone calls, social media communication, visits, and all the other ways folks have supported us during the last few months. But just as with our Mother, the children would like to thank Hospice of East Texas for the incredible care for our Daddy. Lesley, Karen, Rose, Norma, Britney, Nancy, Joyce and Selena: the care you gave them seemed to be the same care you would give your own family members.
