Services for Betty Jean Arnold Ellis Hughes, 88, of Tyler are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Atria Willow Park (3500 S. Vine) with Rev. Gerry Giles officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home.
Betty passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015, in Tyler.
She was born on December 18, 1926 in Deport, Texas to the late James Rufus and Annie Laurie Strickland Arnold.
Betty graduated from Tyler High School in 1942. She worked as a civilian motor pool driver at Camp Fannin in Tyler during WWII, driving vehicles for military officers. She retired from the Texas Rehabilitation Commission in Houston. She was a volunteer with the Newcomers Club in Quincy, Illinois.
She played the piano at church and in nurseries and performed in a singing trio with her sister Lila and friend Louise Bolter, and sang in numerous choirs; was a den mother and camp fire leader. She enjoyed bridge and supported the Food Bank in Willis and many other charities. She was a life-long Methodist, a member of Marvin United Methodist Church from 1947-1968 and 2012-2015 and the First United Methodist Church of Willis from 2008-2012; and St. Mathews UMC church in Houston and the UMC in Quincy, IL. She loved the Lord and had a love for the piano, music and dancing.
Betty is survived by children, James F. Ellis and wife Jean, of Fremont, California; John D. Ellis and wife Sherry, of Tyler; Jarrell Wade Ellis and wife Shelley, of Willis, Tx; and Jo Ann Roan and husband Chris, of Quincy, Illinois; Barbara (Hughes) Warren and husband Brent of Montgomery, Texas. Grandchildren: Brandon Ellis, and fiancé Jurate Viceraite of Brooklyn, New York; Chris Ellis, of Alexandria, Virginia; Jason Ellis, of Irvine, California; Joshua Ellis and wife Christina of Denver, Colorado; Justin Ellis and Matt Ellis, of Conroe, Texas; Missy Slee and husband Nathan; Becky Livesay and husband Chris; Devin Cargill and Collin Roan; Brooke Elizabeth Roan, of Quincy, Illinois; and Ashlea Kristyne Lausten and husband Drew, of Newport, Kentucky; Randi Nabors and husband Brian; Montgomery, Texas; Tamara and Ginger Warren from the Houston area, and great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Jacob Livesay; Miah Elizabeth and Matthew George Roan, and Adrian Vecera. Betty is also survived by her brother-in-law William (Bill) Mullins of Tyler and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Wayne Hughes; and sister, Lila Arnold Mullins.
