She was born to the late Clarence and Fronie Smith, Aug 6, 1938, in Greensboro, AL, and graduated from Greensboro High School.
Ruth was married to Hugo Johnson in 1961 where they lived together in Mobile, AL before moving to Tuscaloosa in 1966.
Ruth is survived by children Darrell Johnson of Duncanville, AL and Marcia Smith (Jeff) of Tuscaloosa. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Ashley Haydu (Scott) of Duncanville, AL, William Smith, and Emily Smith of Tuscaloosa, two great-grandchildren: Anabelle & Stella Haydu of Duncanville, AL, and siblings Robert Smith (Josephine) of Pensacola, FL, Rosalind Mathews (Foster) of Indian Springs, AL, Ronald Smith (Linda) of Chattanooga, TN.
Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband in 2012, after nearly 51 years of marriage and brother Richard Smith (Odean).
Ruth had a passion of being the caregiver of her family, of both young and old, whenever there was need. She never hesitated to step up and help those that could not help themselves.
She also had a love of genealogy research she shared with her sister Rosalind Mathews for many decades and helped contribute to some publications. Ruth also had an affection for North Carolina Smoky Mountains, where she and her husband Hugo built and owned several cabins. Perennial gardening was a favorite hobby of Ruth's and she was also a partner in a snapdragon farm in Coker, AL in years past.
Ruth was greatly loved by her family because of the kind, caring, and generous person she was. She always pointed her children and grandchildren to Christ, planting seeds of faith that will go on for generations to come.

A private graveside ceremony was held on August 15, 2023, with Pastor Amy Howard of United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa officiating. Pallbearers were Jeff Smith, Scott Haydu, William Smith, Darrell Johnson, & Buzz Chinnis.
