A visitation will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Memory Chapel, followed immediately by a Funeral Service at 2:00PM from the funeral home Chapel, with Rev. Scott McCown officiating. A Graveside Service, with Military Honors will follow from Memory Hill Gardens, Garden of Prayer.
Ronald was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 17, 1933 to the late Paul and Ruby Aney Holmes. He won a scholarship to play baseball for the University of Minnesota High School, but when the Korean War broke out he got his parents signatures and was able to enlist in the Army. He became a paratrooper for the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. While in Kentucky, he met his wife to be, Peggy Marie Ellis. Later, two sons were born at Fort Campbell, Kentucky Army Hospital, Ronnie Jr. and Gary Lee Holmes. During his enlistment in the Army, Mr. Holmes was taken to the Yucca Flats in 1951 to watch the testing of the Atomic Bomb, making him part of the historical “Atomic Veterans.” Ron spent 30 years in the military with tours of duty in Germany, France and Korea. During these tours his family was able to accompany him to Germany and France. In his later years, he served the Army as a Recruiter. Mr. Holmes was a decorated veteran, having been awarded numerous medals and awards.
He and Peggy were baptized together in 1954, a week before their wedding, obeying the Gospel at the Church of Christ, being a member of the church in Clarksville, Tennessee until his death. Mr. Holmes will be missed greatly and loved forever, as a Christian, a great American and a devout family man.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son Gary Lee Holmes I; sisters Marvel Bacon, Mavis Kosnaphal and Shirley Stevens; and brothers Lester Holmes and Paul “Bud” Holmes.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Holmes; son Ronnie (Judy) Holmes; grandsons: Ronnie (Brandy) Holmes III, Chris (Sherri) Holmes, Joshua (Erica) Holmes, Lee (Mackenzie) Holmes; great-grandchildren: Bradleigh Bridges, Bayleigh Holmes, Graysie Holmes, Lilly Holmes, Savanna Holmes, Hunter Holmes, Holden Holmes, Sawyer Holmes, Miller Holmes, Ava Lynlee Holmes; one great-great granddaughter Everleigh Tidmore; one sister Pauline Koran and one brother Floyd Holmes, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Serving as Active Pallbearers will be Ronnie Holmes III, Chris Holmes, Hunter Holmes, Holden Holmes, Josh Holmes and Miller Holmes.
