Peggy Jean Riddle Reed, 88, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, passed away peacefully the morning of June 12, 2023, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 19, 2023, at Trinity United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Penny Ford officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday evening, June 18, 2023, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Joe Thomas Reed, and her parents.
Survivors include her two sons, Joe Thomas “Tommy” Reed, Jr. (Marion) and Michael Wayne Reed (Abbie); brother, Paul Riddle (Brenda); grandchildren, Sarah Vivian Reed, Meghan Reed Acker (Luke), Emily Bice Reed, Tyler Stephen Reed(Hannah Whisler), Charlie Wayne Reed (Jessica), and MaryGrace Reed Broedell (Jake); great-grandchildren, Vivian Jarrell, India Jarrell, Ella Self, Henry Thomas Jarrell, Reed Acker and Atlee Acker.
Peggy was born August 10, 1934, in Odenville, Alabama to the late Mary Lou Riddle and Verde L. Riddle. She married Joe Reed of Ackerman, Mississippi on August 29, 1954 and later moved to Tuscaloosa. She was the bookkeeper for Crystal Laundry and Northington Laundry before going to work at the University of Alabama in the College of Engineering. She retired in 1996 after 25 years of service and began working part-time for the Office of Procurement. She went on to work a total of 50 years at the University of Alabama until her resignation in the fall of 2022. She was an avid supporter of Crimson Tide athletics and a longtime member of Tide Pride. Peggy was a devout Christian and an active member of Trinity United Methodist.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Reed, Charlie Reed, Luke Acker, Jake Broedell, Jeremy Harrison, George Strickland, Denise Moody, and Ryan Colston.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her Trinity UMC Sunday School Class; current and former colleagues of her beloved University of Alabama; and the doctors, nurses and medical staff of DCH Regional Medical Center who tendered unconditional care for her over the recent weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Trinity United Methodist Church, 729 Paul Bryant Drive, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, or Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.
