Melvin D. Blizzard

Melvin Darrell Blizzard, 75, of Tuscaloosa, passed away on Wednesday, June 08, 2022 at Park Manor Health and Rehabilitation in Northport. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 2:00pm from Gospel Light Baptist Church, 1436 Prude Mill Road, Cottondale, AL, with Steven Rimes officiating. A brief visitation will be held immediately following the Memorial Service.

Melvin was born January 31, 1947 in West Virginia, to the late Joseph and Frances Blizzard. He joined the United States Army at the age of 17 and served his country during Vietnam. Throughout his life Melvin was a Proud Vietnam Vet and he exemplified what it meant to be a proud American. After his military service, he returned home to West Virginia and began a 43 year career working as a Coal Miner. Eventually, his coal mining work relocated him and his family, to Tuscaloosa, AL, with Jim Walter Resources. He worked as a Belt Foreman in the mines, a job that he took much pride in, was good at and loved immensely. A Coal Miner through and through, he was a “Man’s Man,” a hard worker, and he longed for the days he could returned to the mines, even after his retirement. After his retirement he enjoyed travelling, having been to many places, such as Alaska, Hawaii and New England, to name a few.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Blizzard was preceded in death by his wife Madge Blizzard, son Steven Blizzard, daughter Valerie Stephens and brothers: Carl Jones and Tony Blizzard.

He is survived by his wife Frances Lowe Blizzard; daughter Amy Leeann Blizzard; son Jason W. Bearden (Amanda); grandchildren: Gavin Stephens, Autumn and Stormy Blizzard, Matthew Barger, Malorie Kizziah, and Alyson, Michael and Joshua Bearden; two sisters: Jackie and Stephanie; and two brothers: Johnny and Russell.
