She is preceded in death by her parents, John T. and Callie Alston Carter, her husband Jack Wilbanks Shannon, her brothers Sam and John Carter, and her sisters Catherine Morgan, Nina Barker and Connie Pike. Eula is survived by her daughter, Melanie Metz, and her son, Don Shannon. She is also survived by her niece and caretaker, Judy Carter, her grandchildren, Bradley Shannon, Melanie Paige Wells (Austin), Bethany Broussard (Adrien), Jonathan Metz, Carter Metz (Anne Claire), her great-grandchildren, Sebastian Shannon, Addie Grace Shannon, Jada Wells, Jackson Metz, Savannah Metz, and Judah Metz, along with many nieces and nephews, and her adopted family, Dan, Renee, Brandon and Connor Hafenrichter, Jan and Brian Graham, and Dr. Keith and Carol DeBell.
Eula was born October 19, 1927, in Macon, Georgia. Following the passing of her father, she and her mother and sister moved to Tuscaloosa when Eula was just 13. She went on to graduate from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition and served as Dietician for Southwestern Theological Seminary in Forth Worth, Texas, and as the director of the Child Nutrition Program for Tuscaloosa, Alabama City Schools for over 20 years. Eula also served as an adjunct professor in the Food and Nutrition program at the University of Alabama. Eula was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and served her Lord there for over 65 years. “Granny,” as she was affectionately known, loved the Lord Jesus Christ, her family, her church family and her friends. She was always interested in everyone’s story, and never met a stranger in all her years of life.
A service in celebration of Eula’s life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 11 am, led by Rev. Joseph Robinson. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2022, from 6-8 pm at Memory Chapel Funeral Home.
