TUSCALOOSA – Rev. Marvin W. Johnson, age 96, passed away at DCH Regional Medical Center April 18, 2021. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Rev. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Elder and Wescott B. Johnson; sister, Mamie Lou Simmons; and brothers, Herman H. Johnson, Roland R. Johnson, Grady B. Johnson, Wescott Bruce Johnson, and William H. Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Jean Johnson; daughter, Susanne Tuck (James); son, Bruce E. Johnson; granddaughter, Sarah Biera (Bradley); and two great-grandchildren.
Rev. Johnson proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He arrived on the scene in the wake of the Normandy Invasion, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned several medals; among them were three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and Purple Heart. Rev. Johnson served with the Gideons and worked with the Army Corps of Engineers. Following his retirement, he served as the pastor of many churches, including Clinton First Baptist Church, Beulah Baptist Church, Piney Grove Baptist Church, and Faith Baptist Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed farming, tending to his vegetable garden, fishing, playing card games, and traveling the country with his beloved wife in their RV.
