Martha Jane Powell, age 75, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama passed away on June 20, 2023 at Hospice of West Alabama. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home on July 19, 2023 from 7 PM-9 PM. Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Martha Lee Powell and John James Powell. She is survived by her husband, Will Hoyle Blackwell and brother, James Lee Powell. Martha J. Powell was born January 27, 1948 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Graduating from Western Carolina University, she received her PhD in Botany from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Following postdoctoral study at Purdue University, in fungal cell-biology, she obtained a teaching position at Miami University, Ohio, there she rose to the rank of Distinguished Professor. After three years as Chair of Biology at James Madison University in Virginia, she became Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama, serving in this capacity for 10 years, continuing as Professor for 13 more years. She was eventually awarded the Blackmon-Moody outstanding professor award. Martha loved all her many students, actively encouraging their teaching, research, and life interests. She supported her students’ research interests by grants from The National Science Foundation and The Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Martha loved nature, promoting environmental study and education. As a hobby, she loved to hike and study the species of wild mushrooms she encountered. Her research focused on the systematics of parasitic fungi of freshwater ecosystems. She received The C. J. Alexopoulos Prize for research in mycology.
