Dr. Mark Helms Thomas, MD, of Tuscaloosa passed away on June 19, 2021 at the age of 55. His medical career spanned 28 years, the last 14 in Tuscaloosa in private practice and on faculty at the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
Dr. Thomas was born in Shellman, GA, spent his childhood and teen years in his beloved Geneva, AL and still considered that home. He attended Samford University where he was vice president of the Student Government Association and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1988. He then went on to attend The University of Alabama Medical School.
Dr. Thomas was passionate about his medical practice, never wanting to turn a patient away. He had a huge heart for missions, especially for the Centro Medico Bautista in Asuncion, Paraguay where he made multiple medical mission trips. He spent his college summers on mission trips to Hawaii and Gatlinburg.
His greatest pride and joy were his two surviving children, Avery Ruth Thomas and Andrew Shelton Thomas. He is also survived by his father Dr. Ralph H. Thomas (Helen Thomas), his sister Mrs. Jennifer T. Sellers, brother in law Chris T. Sellers, niece Anna Kate Sellers, and nephew Todd Sellers. His mother was the late Annette Boyd Thomas of Brent, AL.
A visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church Tuscaloosa at 12:00 Tuesday, June 22 followed by a memorial service at 1:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Paraguay Baptist Medical Center Foundation. Donations can be made directly to the foundation in memory of Dr. Mark Thomas.
