My dad fought in Chinese civil war at a very young age. He moved to Taiwan following the war in 1949. During his years in Taiwan, he married his lifetime love, Te Fang, and raised two children, Tao Chen and Tao Sheng. My dad instilled the importance of education to my brother and I since we were young. To model for us, he studied hard and earned a college degree while working a full-time job to support his family. He was not a big wage earner but he always made sure that his family was well provided for. He worked for various organizations during his career: As an information officer in the military; a businessman in the carpet industry, an assistant editor in the Department of Information and an English teacher in a high school.
My dad was a talented painter. He was particularly good at watercolor ink painting. His handwriting itself was art like. He was a good crafts man. Once he constructed a sturdy mailbox with just few lumber boards. He was also an excellent cook. He was able to host a feast filled with spicy and yummy Sichuanese dishes. He also enjoyed playing poker. He credited poker with keeping his brain sharp.
Following his retirement, my dad spent most years with me residing in Tuscaloosa. He read his Bible every day. He collected small rocks and said these were treasures from God. He enjoyed watching Alabama football and NBA basketball. My dad made friends easily and always had a big warm smile on his face. He was kind and sweet. My dad was a great father, grandfather, and friend. He is and will be forever loved.
