John was born in Tuscaloosa County at Shiloh Towers to the late Woodrow and Jennie Sumner. He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of over 60 years, Susan; daughter Jennifer "Leigh" Sumner; Birmingham, sons Samuel Sumner (Tammy) of Duncanville; and John Woodrow "Woody" Sumner (Jill) of Tuscaloosa; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
John was also survived by one brother, Buddy Sumner (Sue); two sisters, Evelyn Graham and Judy Shuttlesworth (Billy), sister-in-law Elizabeth Sumner, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jonathan "David" Sumner, sister Patricia Herndon, brother-in-law, Melvin Herndon, brother Anthony Wayne "Tony" Sumner, and brother-in-law, Gordon Graham.
He served in the United States Navy for four years. He earned three degrees from the University of Alabama and then embarked on a career in education which spanned over 38 years. He was a Christian who positively impacted many lives while in education. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member at Duncanville Baptist Church. He liked walking on the beach, reading, hunting, and gardening. He especially enjoyed watching Alabama Football which included a trip to the Rose Bowl to watch Alabama win the 2009 National Championship. He, also, worked at Bryant Denny Stadium for 32 years.
His Christian faith, loving kindness, lighthearted humor, and work ethic made him a strong role model to his children and others. He will be missed beyond measure.
