He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Elwin Jackson; brothers, Keith Jackson and Harry Jackson.
He is survived by his spouse, Joan S. Jackson of Cottondale, AL; sons, Tres (John E. Jackson III) of Charleston, SC, Bryant Jackson of Houston, TX, and Jared Jackson of Cottondale, AL; sisters-in-law, Donna Jackson (Keith) and Carole Jackson (Harry); grandchildren, Marcus Jackson of Tuscaloosa, AL, Dylan Jackson of Charleston, SC (Tara Jackson-mother).
John was born in Tuscaloosa, AL. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School. He then attended the University of Alabama where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Masters and a PhD in Mechanics of Engineering. He also played tuba in the Million Dollar Band. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, TN for three years. He was a professor of engineering at Clemson University for twelve years before he returned to his alma mater as head of Aerospace Engineering. The remainder of his career was spent as Professor of Mechanics of Engineering. John loved sports. He played softball for many years. He was an avid fan of Alabama football and baseball. He was a member of the Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment Band. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Pallbearers are Marcus Jackson, Dylan Jackson, Tim Weaver, Willard Corley, Shane Haynes, and Wade Besant.
Honorary pallbearers are Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment Band and Staff of Glen Haven Health and Rehabilitation.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, September 15, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, 2200 Skyland Blvd East, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35405, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM.
