TUSCALOOSA – Lt. Col. Jimmy Gordon Montgomery, age 79, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., died December 10, 2017. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Memory Hill Gardens with Dr. Gary Fenton officiating and Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Friday, December 15, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Samuel Montgomery and Lillian Winter Montgomery.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Alma Ruth Montgomery; daughter, Morgan Montgomery Grandolfo (Nick); son, Anthony Charles "Tony" Montgomery (Jane); sisters, Jerry Ella Junkin and Jeanett Parrott; brother, Johnny Mayfield Montgomery (Liz); and grandchildren, Jessica Montgomery and Robert Montgomery.
Jimmy was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School. He retired from the Army Reserves as a Lt. Col. after 35 years of service. He also retired from the Post Office.
Jimmy was an active American Legion member, serving as Commander of Post 34 for many years.
One of his proudest accomplishments was his 23 year friendship with Bill W., through which he was able to touch so many lives through The Phoenix House and Bradford.
Anyone who knew Jimmy can honestly say there was no one on earth like him, from his sense of humor to his wardrobe.
Jimmy would not want people to be sad from his passing, but instead to remember to keep laughing and although he wasn't the class clown, he did sit beside him.
Pallbearers will be Jack Thompson, Lee Hallman, Andrew Carroll, David Samya, Robert Montgomery, Walter Phillips, George Berry and Jim Meherg.
Honorary pallbearers are Lt. Col. Coty Wade, C.R.N.P., Dr. Bouchard, Richard Shelby, Dr. Robinson, The Phoenix House, River Road AA, Kathryn Romain, DCH Home Health Care, Home Instead, Post 34 American Legion, The Moose Lodge, Heritage Health Care and Rehab, Englewood Hulls Volunteer Fire Department, Hospice of West Alabama and friends of the Wooden Door.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Phoenix House or the River Road AA clubhouse.
