Son of Herschel Waltman and Lottie Waltman, he was born March 26th, 1940, in Mobile Alabama. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1959 and entered the Air Force shortly after, serving proudly, stationed in Moses Lake, Washington. Following his Air Force duty, he worked his entire career, over 30 years, for United Parcel Service. Though never satisfied with sitting still, he, Elaine and their very close friends spent years traveling the world for pleasure and missionary work.
He was preceded to heaven by his mother and father, aunts and uncles and three of his siblings. He is survived by wife and mother of his children, Elaine Waltman of Tuscaloosa, and their children: James “Jimmy” Waltman Jr. of Tuscaloosa and wife Susan Burch Waltman, their children Mary Catherine Waltman Gorham (Robert Coursey) of Birmingham, James Lowery Waltman, III (“Trip”) of Tuscaloosa, Laura Waltman Ramos (Nicolas Pedro) of Cincinnati; son Barry Waltman and wife Beth Bostick Waltman and child Camille Waltman of Tuscaloosa; and brother Edward Waltman of Houston TX as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Jim was a deeply beloved husband, father, uncle, cousin, brother, and friend. His passing was not sudden but comfortable till the end.
While we lost our most beloved dad, who provided the finest example of what it means to be a man, husband and father to us, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. Jim’s welcoming, disarming and loving spirit made him easy to love and be around. Jim’s love for the Lord was evident in his life-long commitment to Christlike behaviors and helping others in the Lord’s name. As a youth he was an outstanding track athlete wining many awards, a State championship and set the state pole vault record that stood for many years. He was always involved in his sons’ lives as they grew up coaching their sport teams, Cub Scout and Webelos Boy Scout leader, working with his eldest son Jim to become an outstanding track athlete as well and taking leadership and services roles in his church. There was so much more to him than just dad, though to us that was his greatest role - he was also a friend, a coworker and colleague, a cousin, brother, woodworker, artist - the list goes on and on.
We invite you all to share pictures or memories. It was his wish that we laugh and reminisce and smile together during this time.
A celebration of life for Jim will be Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Calvary Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Joseph Robinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider contributing in Jim’s memory to Hospice of West Alabama.
