Dalton Shields, age 95, of Tuscaloosa, died Jan. 21, 2013, at Glen Haven Nursing Home. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Hal Noble officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Kate Shields; his mother, Ethel R. Shields, his father, George C. Shields; and his sister, Loie S. Jackson.
Survivors include daughters, Vickie Shields Willis (Steve) and Jan Shields McAnally; son, J. Steve Shields (Jane); four grandchildren, Jason E. Shields, Jennifer S. Hall (Marcus), Daniel R. Willis, and Hunter D. Willis; and three great-grandchildren, Jay Moore, Marcus Hall, Jr., and Kyla Halbert.
Mr. Shields was born Dec. 15, 1917, in Dozier, Alabama. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a 1941 graduate of the University of Auburn. Mr. Shields retired from Alfa Insurance Company in 1979. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He always had a very positive outlook on life and was very outgoing. He loved the outdoors and loved his pets. He will be greatly missed by all.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Brown, Harold Griffin, Hillary Jeffcoat, Jim Standifer, Robert Cotton, and Albert Avery.
Honorary pallbearers are Alfa Insurance Company, Morning Point Assisted Living, Glenn Haven Nursing Home, Forest Lake United Methodist Church, Brown Garage and Body Shop, Dr. Leonard Jones, Dr. Arturo Otero, Norris Circle friends and neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
