NORTHPORT – Carolyn Jane Smith, age 77, passed away November 26, 2022 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Skot Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Carolyn worked several years at Gulf State Paper until its closing. She spent most her life as a homemaker raising her two daughters and her two younger sisters after their mother's untimely death. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was happiest with a child on her lap. She was "Nanny" not only to her own grandchildren, but to many other children as well. She took great pride in creating beautiful quilts to give to family members. She continued to quilt until her health began to fail. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals for her family and anyone who came into her home. Momma had a huge heart and her family was the center of her world. She enjoyed traveling with her beloved husband to the beach, mountains and many Nascar races. While we are heartbroken by her passing, we rejoice knowing she is reunited with daddy after a year of deeply grieving for him. It is not goodbye, it is until we meet again.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Windle Smith; parents, Howard and Elaine Freeman; and sister, Debra Wheatley.
She is survived by her daughters, Becky Case (Tim) and Renae Rushing (Jason); twin sister, Judy Perkins (David) and sister, Linda Newman (Gary); brother, Jerome Freeman (Brenda); grandchildren, Jamie Montgomery (Skot), Courtney Lesley (Adam), Miranda Green (Seth), Andrew Stephens (Lindsey), TJ Case (Kimberly), Jeff Case (Ashlyn), William Case, and Peyton Rushing; great-grandchildren, Cedar, Smith, Avett, Emerson, Maggie, Hadley, Liam, Reese, Sydney, Killian, and Izabella; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Stephens, Adam Lesley, Jeff Case, Gary Newman, Joey Dodson, and Danny Lynn.
Honorary pallbearers are past employees of Gulf States Paper, neighbors of Booth Estates, and a special thank you Kerri Wheatley and Gary and Linda Newman for helping care for our mother during her illness.
