She was born on November 5, 1920, in Russellville, Alabama, the son of Robert L. and Hattie Lawler Taylor. At the age of one year old, she moved with her family to West, Texas. After graduating from West High School, she attended the University of Alabama from which she graduated with a B.S. degree in education in 1941. She also earned a B.S. degree in library science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1950.
Mrs. Mitchell was a librarian. After having served in various capacities in several university libraries, she served as the librarian of the Blacksburg Elementary School and its successor, the Margaret Beeks Elementary School, in Blacksburg, Virginia from 1961 until her retirement in 1980.
She was a member of the Chief Tuskaloosa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Arts & Letters, Tuscaloosa Study Club, the University Club and the First Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, H.H. "Bill" Mitchell in 2003, by her grandson, William A. L. Mitchell in 2005, and by each of her four siblings: William H. Taylor, Robert L. Taylor, Barbara Taylor Cooper and James M. Taylor.
She is survived by her four children: William H. Mitchell (Joan) of Tuscaloosa, Robert M. "Mike" Mitchell (Angela) of Gulf Shores, Richard Mitchell (Barbara) of Mobile and Mary Ann Mitchell Tanner (Edward) of Peachtree City, Ga.; by six grandchildren: Megan Mitchell Young of Beaumont, Texas; Karmen J. Mitchell of Radford, Virginia; Robert L. Mitchell of Mobile; Mary Lafitte Mitchell Buster of Fairhope; and Elliott M. Tanner and Wyatt W. Tanner, of Peachtree City; and by five great-grandchildren: Audrey Jane Young, William A. L. Mitchell II, Anne Price Mitchell, William R. Buster V and Caroline Lewis Buster. Mrs. Mitchell is also survived by the children of Joan P. Mitchell: W. Cameron Parsons, Juliella Parsons and Craig B. Parsons III.
A graveside burial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
