John Cardoso Couto, age 78, of Merced, California passed away at his home surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. John was born March 28, 1943, in Riberinha, Terceira, Açores to Maria do Çarmo Cardoso and Mateus Toste do Couto.
John is survived by his spouse of 51 years, Mary J. Couto of Merced; his daughter Mary Couto Lopes (Elder) of Merced, his daughter Ann Marie Couto Silva (Hilbert) of Merced, his brother José Couto (Diamantina) of Hilmar, his brother Fernando Couto (Natalina) of Riberinha, Terceira, Açores, his sister-in-law Lisete Alves Ferreira of Riberinha, Terceira, Açores, his sister-in-law Juvelina Castro of Riberinha, Terceira, Açores and his sister-in-law Mary Parreira of Atwater; John also leaves behind his Grandchildren, Kaitlyn Lopes, Lauren Lopes, Johnathan Lopes, Lukas Silva and Erik Silva to honor his memory. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and God Children.
John was preceded in death by his father Mateus Toste do Couto and his mother Maria do Çarmo Cardoso; and his two brothers Mateus Couto and Antonio Couto.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Merced, he was a past President of the Festa Senhor Santo Cristo of Buhach, he was a member of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine, Our Lady of Fatima in Merced, P.F.S.A. and Luso America. John also served in the Portuguese Army.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, March 11, 2022, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service, 286 West Main, Turlock, CA 95380.
A Rosary service at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass, Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 671 E. Yosemite Avenue, Merced, CA 95340.
A Committal service followed by the Funeral Mass will occur Saturday, March 12, 2022.
Serving as Pallbearers are Elder Lopes, Hilbert Silva, Joe Couto, Fernando Jorge Toste, Leonel Soares and Tony Couto.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are, Lukas Silva and Erik Silva.
