James was born on January 21, 1940 in Oak Grove, Louisiana. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 4 years, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him, and what also ironically helped him find out more about himself. Upon entering the service, he found out that his legal name was in fact James, and not the “Eddie” he was known to be his entire childhood. From then on, he became affectionately known as Ed, Jim, and JB. After his service he became a member of the Turlock VFW 5059 and enjoyed the sense of companionship that they provided.
James had a passion for life and found joy in the simple moments. He spent countless hours on the bowling lanes, often accompanied by his loving wife, Elizabeth. Together, they created cherished memories, both on and off the lanes. Their bond was unbreakable, and they enjoyed many adventures, from parenting their two children Steven and Joanne to traveling up to Redwood City and the Bay Area to visit with friends. After his wife’s passing, he managed to retain some his adventurous spirit, and began to go on camping trips with his best friend Harold Downing and his various other friends.
A true artist at heart, James was an avid photographer. His camera was a constant companion, and he had a remarkable ability to capture the beauty of everyday moments. Whether it was a family gathering, a sunset, or a quiet morning walk, he could always be found with his lens aimed to capture the world through his eyes, preserving memories for future generations. His children could attest to his penchant for snapping a photo everywhere and anywhere.
James often took trips to Virginia to visit with his daughter and his only granddaughter Coffey, who would become the apple of his eye and joyful light in his life as he aged. Their bond was so close that she decided to honor him by following in his steps and joining the Navy.
He is survived by his children Steven E. Brock and Joanne L. Brock and his granddaughter Coffey E. Smith. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 38 years, Elizabeth V. Brock, his mother Hazel Ollie Butler-Brock-Sadler, his stepfather Robert Sadler, and his father William Grady Brock.
James will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, service, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
