I have countless memories with my great grandpa. Shamefully there are times I’ve forgotten how lucky I am to have so many memories with my GREAT grandparents. It’s so rare, and I am lucky. You were the last of my greats, and I’d be lying if I said “great” was an appropriate description of who you were. You were more than great, and I love you. One of my favorite childhood memories was going to San Diego. I was ten. We stayed with your friends Anne and Floyd. I remember sea world, Floyd’s bee farm, and this strange man across the street who painted his concrete green rather than having grass. I remember the smell of the air, strange enough the smell of my deodorant, and my first plane ride. I remember how the temperature was consistently perfect. Because of this trip, San Diego is one of my favorite places to visit. It’s more than a place…it’s a feeling, and one of the fondest memories I’ve ever had. Truly there aren’t many childhood memories that don’t include you, and I know how blessed that makes me. You were at all my birthdays, grandma made all my cakes, every milestone included you. Now, to lose you, 37 years into this expedition I call “life”, that’s hard to fathom. I can’t ever thank you enough for simply being. Saying goodbye is the worst, and there’s no good way to do it, but I will think fondly of you every day…just like I do grandma. I hope you two finally get to see each other again and you can join her in watching over all of us – laughing with us from afar and sending a feeling of comfort when we need it most. Missing you is an understatement, because life without you doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. You always told me “Every day I wake up on this side of the dirt, it’s a good day”….here’s to many many many good days we have had as a family. I will drink a schooner of beer in your memory, grandpa, and will strive to speak my mind and appreciate all things that are cuter than a pile of frozen dog crap.
