Mom, Phyllis (Hayden) Guitar, a loving daughter, mother, grandmother & great-grandmother, has joined the angels & her husband in the Heavens above. Born in Missoula, Montana (1932), and raised in Stevensville, Montana, she grew up to be a very strong and independent woman. After graduating from Stevensville High School (1950), she moved to Spokane, Washington. While in Spokane, she waited tables and enjoyed dancing at a USO Dance Hall. It was at that dance hall where she met the love of her life, Daniel M. Guitar. On February 28, 1953, they were married and said the years they shared together were accomplished without any regrets; consequently, they would do it all the same if given the chance.
Mom loved her family and it showed through all the wonderful support, guidance, kind words, hugs, kisses and her unconditional love. She also loved horseback riding, reading, gardening, cooking, baking and of course, spending time with her family. Mom cooked for over thirty years and during that time she cooked for the State of Washington at Cedar Creek Youth Camp, and Rouland Gardens. She also cooked for Alice’s Restaurant, Jeanie’s Bar & Grill (Yelm Stop Inn), and completed cake decorating classes in Germany.
Mom was known for her kind heart and her ability to stand strong for herself. With all her talent and love for cooking and baking, her home always offered something good to eat or something sweet for your palate to enjoy; there was always room for one more plate setting, was one of mom’s house rules. She had many friends whom she talked about often and always smiled while reminiscing. The room would fill with laughter while she shared her stories of the past, particularly stories with her “partner in crime”, Ruby. During the years mom and Ruby were co-workers, they were well known for their stunts they pulled; they had some really good times, as the stories go.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Art & Julia Hayden of Stevensville, MT., and her husband of 54 years, Daniel M. Guitar. Mom will be forever missed and remembered by her brother and sister-in-law, Sam & Florence Hayden of Florence, Montana, her niece Tammy Hayden of Florence, Montana, her four children; Linda (Gary) McDowell of Lacey, WA., Dan (Becky) Guitar of Rainier, WA., Doug Guitar of Rainier, WA., and Michele Guitar (Danny), also of Rainier, Washington. Mom will also be dearly missed and remembered by 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, close friends as her extended family and an abundance of many other friends.
A private memorial is scheduled.
Donations can be sent to Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Lacey, Washington, or to Mills & Mills Funeral Home in Tumwater, Washington.
