Our mother, Patricia Bond Guise (maiden name Irving/Matthias) having reached the age of 88 in November 2013 passed on December 27, 2013. Patricia entered this world in Everett, Washington on November 22, 1925, born to Tom and Mary Irving and shortly thereafter moved to Olympia, Washington.
She grew up in the East Bay Drive community, attending Olympia High School, graduating in 1944. Adopted by Ed Matthias, the man who became her dad in the 1930’s she became active in the U.S. O. Shows during World War II. She married her high school neighborhood sweetheart Arvid W. Shoblom during the war years, and like everyone in those years hoped for a brighter tomorrow after the war. After his return to Olympia and attendance at St. Martin’s College, babies came along. Sonja in 1948, Dan in 1949 and Karen in 1952. Patti as she was known stayed home with the children and a new house was constructed on the homestead that had been the Howe home years before on Johnson Point.
Grandmother Mary Matthias lived next door. Patti was active in the Blue Jeans Homemaker Club with other area moms and many wonderful pictures are in evidence of those gatherings and family get-togethers on the bay. Following a divorce Patti remarried John Guise a local Capital Chevrolet employee who later became an auto mechanic instructor at OVTI. Patti welcomed her first grandchild of eight when Danny and Sandy (Ryser) had a son named Kyle. She was preceded in death by son Daniel Shoblom and is survived by daughters Sonja and Karen, Grandchildren Kyle, Jamil, Corey, Calista, Christian, Jordan, Caitlin, Lexi and two great grandsons born in 2013.
Patti worked from the 1960’s starting with the Elks Club then for Washington State Highways and later Department of Natural Resources in the computer field. She retired in 1987. Patricia enjoyed flower gardening, reading, crocheting, sewing and traveling. She loved driving her classic 1966 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport Convertible around town and watching the Seahawks with best friend Lou Wojtech She was able to live at home these last several years with daughter Karen, passing away peacefully in her own room about a week ago.
