John was born on September 10, 1936 to George and Llora Vosburgh in Amsterdam, New York. He graduated from Canajoharie High School, and attended Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Sciences. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Forestry, he graduated from the University of Michigan and moved to Oregon to begin his career as a Forester.
John was working on the Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon when he married Jeanne Caroline Maines. They had a daughter, Jodie, and a son, Jaret. After living in Beaver, Oregon and working on the Siusalaw National Forest he had a brief stop in Corvallis. Then the family moved to Burns, Oregon, where John worked on the Ochoco National Forest. In 1976 the final move was to Tumwater, Washington. John became Timberland Management Planner for the Olympic National Forest. During his career, John Vosburgh received three Certificates of Merit from the United States Department of Agriculture. John retired in 1994 after 34 years with the United States Forest Service.
John loved being in the great outdoors. Snow skiing, water skiing, hunting, camping, white water rafting, canoeing, wine making, photography and cutting firewood were just a few of his passions. He also enjoyed many pastimes and hobbies including square dancing, gardening, bowling, roller skating and ice skating. John Vosburgh was honest, caring and hard working. He was the kind of man that would drop whatever he was doing to answer a call for help from family, friends, and even strangers. He believed in God, he was generous, and he was an example of unconditional love to his family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George and Llora Vosburgh, his two brothers, George R., and Dean, and his niece, Barbara Lee Vosburgh. He is survived by his wife Jeanne, his daughter Jodie with her husband Mike Sturdevant, his son Jaret and his wife Cindy, grandchildren Hannah, Kayla, Austin, Braden, Tessa, Alex, and Lauren, nephews George O, Gerry, and David, and sister-in-law Bobbie.
