John W. McCarty, 91, of Olympia, WA passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard, Washington.
He is survived by his wife Linda, his two brothers Larry and Bill McCarty, his children, Saundra McCarty, Deana and Brett Turner, Alan and Davy Benner, Mike McCarty, and Danica and Rob Ells, his nine grandchildren and his three great-grandchildren.
John is a Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served 20 years on active duty in the United States Navy retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1962. His awards and decorations include the Navy Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), WWII American and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medals, WWII Victory Medal, WWII Navy Occupation Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, UN Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. After leaving active duty he went on to serve as a Department of the Navy civilian for 15 years serving during the Vietnam War and beyond. The discipline, patriotism and hard work he learned in the Navy never left him, as his family and friends will attest. John was never one to sit idle. He drove a school bus for the Olympia School District for 10 years and continued to work for Bill Strobl, local mechanic, until he couldn’t walk. John loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, clamming, and long walks in the woods with his dogs. His softer side included many romantic dinners, dancing, and monthly anniversary flowers for his wife, Linda.
Veteran, patriot, protector, hero and “A Great Man,” John will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
Services will be held Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at American Legion Post 94, 2602 Marvin Road SE, Olympia, Washington. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard, WA or East Olympia Church, Olympia, WA (attention: Pastor Jim).
