John Johnston, 86, of Olympia, Washington died at home on May 2, 2014. John was born on October 19, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA to John and Helen (Kujawski) Johnston. He grew up in Pittsburgh and enlisted in the Army the day he turned 18. The Army brought him to Ft. Lewis where he met the love of his life, Lillian McGovern. He spent the rest of his life on the West Coast and worked full time for the National Guard, retiring as a Colonel in 1982.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillian; sister Dorothy Higgens of Pittsburgh, PA; daughters Claudia Johnston, Jonny (John) Kobylus, and Judith (Philip) Shave. He was fondly known as Grandpa Ocean by 6 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by my many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were 4 brothers, 1 sister and 3 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday, May 15, 2014, 1:00 PM at Mills & Mills Funeral Home, 5725 Littlerock Rd SW, Tumwater, Washington..
