In 1946 the family moved to Cherokee. In 1950 the Korean war had broke out. Evan left school after his Jr. year to enter the service of his Country, proudly serving in the Navy 1950 to 1953. Served aboard the USS Leroy Wilson DE 414. His main duty was running the post office and was most proud of serving as ship’s Chaplin. During this time he earned his GED. In 2004, was very proud and happy to receive an honorary diploma from Cherokee High School.
After his discharge he spent about 40 years in grocery management, mostly for Safeway stores ending at the Tumwater Mega Foods where he met and married his beloved Jeannie. He retired in 1994.
He and Erma Jean Gideon were married on August 22, 1991. They traveled extensively in the USA and much of Canada. Between trips, spent much time with family and friends. He enjoyed cards and games. Always an achiever liked being the winner. Had a great sense of humor.
He was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ. He and Jeannie were active members of the Olympia Church on Boulevard Road.
Survivors include his wife Jeannie, daughter Deborah Miller of Spokane, grandson Corey Scanlon of Portland, grandson Geoffrey Scanlon, granddaughter Shannon (Lewie) Holly, great-grandson Bradley Holly, great-granddaughter Finley Holly of Spokane. Numerous nieces and nephews. Brother Robert Miller of Mesa, Arizona, sisters Shirley Landis of Shelton, Sandra Morrison formerly of Shelton. Step-family Garry Gideon (Toni), Marty Gideon (Elaine), Marla Hanna (Allen), six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father Martin Miller, his mother Ethel Casteel, sister Sharon K. Williams.
A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m. at the Olympia Church of Christ, 3132 Boulevard Road S.E. Olympia, WA.
