I just wanted to share some news with the Johnston family. I made a promise to continue to advocate and care for my fellow military spouses summer of 2023 at Le Buzz. Last week I traveled to Washington DC to accept the humanitarian of the year award which the American Chiropractic Association awarded to ALL the chiropractic military spouses. It was a great honor and Bob’s words were in my heart. The advocacy for military spouses continues with Bob always a guiding light.

My sincere and deepest condolences to the family. I served with General Johnson and will always remember his sacrifice and leadership. I have a personal letter that he wrote to my promotion board..,that made the difference. Again , my sincere condolences.

I met General Johnston in okinawa, Japan. He was a Bridgader General then in 1987 and I served under his command 3rd Mar Div. and also 1st Mar Div. in 1988. There are two Marine Corps Warriors I call legend, Chesty Puller and Robert Johnston. I can tell you that he was my personal Hero and a "Legendary Marine".  The only Marine General to out run me in a 10K in which the General ran a swift 32:25 and I can in at 34:15.
A gentleman, a great Marine leader, and a Warrior Marine Legend. Rip my friend, my Hero, and my Commanding Officer. My deep condolences to his family, wife, and friends.

Just saw that LtGen Johnston passed in the latest Semper Fidelis newsletter.  Very sad.  Couldn't have had a better example of what it meant to be a Marine Officer.  A true gentleman, physical stud and poster perfect in appearance and demeanor.  He was the CO of OCS when I was a candidate, and I had the honor of having him swear me in as a new 2ndLt.   His example stayed with me through my 30 years of service.  I've always been grateful that our paths crossed.  My sincere condolences to his family and close friends.   Fair winds and following seas, Sir.  I hope to see you on Heaven's streets when my time comes.

I just received the SEMPER FIDELIS  Newsletter and learned about the passing of the sharpest Marine Corps Officer that I have ever had the opportunity to serve under.  I never forgot how while as the Commanding Officer of OCS he lead by example in every aspect of being a leader of Marines. He basically knew a large portion, if not all of those under his charge by name,  His appearance in uniform was always impeccable. He lead from the front whether on a 25 mile conditioning hike or maxing  the PFT.  I was also honored to have been meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sgt.  by then Colonel Johnston.  I’m am forever grateful to have observed his leadership firsthand, it made a significant impact on the rest of Marine Corps career.  Respectfully, James Brady MGYSGT Ret.

Saw General Johnston's name in "Taps" in "Semper Fidelis" and immediately recognized him.  He had such influence on the Marines at CamPen.  He had a generals authority, but with encouraging affect. This was about 1992.  I was a "Gunny" getting a haircut at Main side barber. Gen Johnston came in.  It was "Attention on deck". I was sitting in the barber's chair, and couldn't actually stand up because a barber's chair is so cumbersome.  The thing about Gen Johnston was: he inspired, and made everyone want to do their best.

I served under Lt. Gen. Johnston twice during my Marine Corps career: first, when he was commanding officer of 8th Marines, and then when he was the commanding officer of Officer Candidate School. I consider myself blessed to have served under his command. He was a fine leader and a great role model to officers and enlisted Marines alike.

General Johnston was the CO of OCS, when I was a Candidate. An exceptional leader, who was always setting the example. RIP General, and Semper Fi.

I worked for him at I MEF in 1992-93 and can attest he was a role model and superb officer.

Dear Johnston Family:
I knew the General when we were both students at San Diego State University.  He was a standout then, and a legendary rugby player.  I always admired and respected him.   I followed his Marine Corps career with great pleasure, as I was a 31-year reservist, retiring as a colonel.   I am absolutely not surprised that he reached so high into the leadership of the Corps.  I was stunned to read of his passing, and so disappointed that I didn’t have a chance to see him one more time and had some closure with him, reminiscing about our time at SDSU.  My deepest condolences to Sandra and family.

I met Bob in 2008, thanks to retired Arizona track coach Dave Murry.  Bob was a tremendous supporter of military spouses, including myself. His mentorship was invaluable as I grew in my professional career.  I will dearly miss my running and cycling friend and will not forget my assigned mission to make life better for fellow military spouses.  While this is late, we will pay proper respects when my husband returns from deployment.

The General will continue to lead us up hills for years to come.  This picture is the front of his bike at 8K' above Tucson.  The great man's strength and kindness will live longer still.  Jason & Patti

We have had the privilege of knowing Robert through our dear friend Sandra, a fellow hiker. Robert was the most humble and down-to-earth person we have ever known, which is amazing given his rank and stature. We were blown away when we were at their home and saw all the medals and pictures of Robert with various presidents. We feel so lucky to have been counted among his friends. We are thankful to this great American hero and also to his co-hero Sandra for all their sacrifices and love for each other, their family and friends. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Johnston family. We will surely miss the presence of a truly great man and kind person. 
It was a honor and privilege to have known Robert as our extended family member  but also a dear friend.  Robert was an inspiring person who made a positive difference in the lives of others near and far. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of family, caring, kindness, and compassion he showed everyone. 
Those we love are never really gone they have a cherished place in our hearts. Robert will always be remembered by our family  for the kindness he showed ,the love he shared, and the happiness he brought.  May he rest in peace.

A Marine's Marine to be sure. I served under LtGen Johnston when he was CG, I MEF and I was at the SOTG. His driver would frequently take the General and his Chief of Staff, Col Billy Steed, drop them off many miles away out in town and they would run back to I MEF HQ. About ten years ago I met Robert while he was flipping burgers for Sandra's hungry hiking club members in the Santa Catalinas. I remarked that he looked as tanned and fit as he did when on active duty in the USMC. He responded "You haven't looked under the hood." We chuckled then but miss him now.

He was one hell of a Marine.  I had the extreme honor of serving under him and was a better Marine as a result.  Semper Fidelis!

I’d like to express my sincere condolences for the loss of LtGen Johnston. He was my OCS C.O. at Quantico in the Summer of ‘84 then base CG at Camp Butler during my tour in Okinawa. He set a superb example for all those around him and showed great leadership abilities at all times. You will be missed Sir until we meet in Heaven. Uncle Robert was a wonderful person.  He was my grandmothers only sibling and she adored him. He was always very kind to me ( his great neice) and my parents.

I didn't get to spend alot of time with him as adult. I did as a child though. I have very fond memories of him reading to me and calling him Uncle Rabbit

I have lit candles and prayed for him
He was absolutely the heart of the Johnston family and clan. I send my deepest condolences to my great aunt and cousins. May he rest in peace
