Robert Ballantyne Johnston was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on October 6, 1937. He immigrated to the United States in 1955 and graduated from San Diego State University in 1961. On May 6, 1961, he married Sandra Wallace Blodgett, his college sweetheart.
During December of 1961, Robert Johnston was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. During his nearly 35 years of service, he held command at every level. As a General Officer, he commanded both the I and II Marine Expeditionary Force. Robert Johnston also held numerous special command and staff assignments such as the Commanding Officer, Officer Candidates School, and the Aid-de-Camp to the 27th Commandant of the Marine Corps – General Robert H. Barrow.
Robert Johnston is considered one of the Marine Corps’ greatest “operators” and a “Marine’s Marine”. As a Lieutenant he served two tours of combat in Vietnam, one of those tours as a rifle company commander. As a senior field grade officer, he commanded Battalion Landing Team 2/8 and led major peacekeeping operations in Beirut, Lebanon. As a Major General, he deployed with United States Central Command to Saudi Arabia, where he served as the Chief of Staff to General Norman Schwarzkopf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded I Marine Expeditionary Force and led a combined task force of US and allied troops in a hugely successful United Nations mission to deliver humanitarian relief supplies to Somalia – Operation RESTORE HOPE. Robert Johnston assumed his final assignment as Commander, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, II Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Forces Europe. He retired from active duty in 1995.
Robert Johnston’s legendary service to the Marine Corps and to our great Nation was equaled by his love and devotion to his wife, Sandra, and both of this sons, Robert Jr. and Gary. He also enjoyed the wonderful blessing of three incredible grandchildren – Cameron, Ian, and Morgan Ann. Throughout 62 years of marriage, the Johnston family never went without and together overcame the trials and tribulations often associated with being a Marine family. Robert Johnston was the heart of Clan Johnston and will be forever irreplaceable.
A graveside service for Robert will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 East Grant Road, #C, Tucson, AZ 85712.
