It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Prudence Cain on April 7, 2025. She was our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, in addition to, a loving friend, devoted nurse, world traveler, adventurer, continuous student and Master Bridge Player.
Born in Marengo, Illinois on August 24,1938, Prudy graduated from Northwestern School of Nursing in Evanston, Illinois and later moved to Detroit. She perfected her nursing skills in departments ranging from the ER to Labor and Delivery to the OR, and everywhere in between. Her caring expertise was felt in each of the various Detroit area hospitals she worked. After having her three children, Prudy worked at Children’s Hospital of Detroit before becoming a private duty nurse. As a single mother in the ‘70s, she was left with little to no financial assistance or spousal support, but with the help and generosity of her friends, her family flourished. She was a role model and inspiration to many; ahead of her time in proving that a woman CAN make a life on her own. Prudy was always cognizant of the help she received and in turn was a cheerful, bountiful giver and maestro of making friends. She sensed what people needed and knew the perfect way of delivering it- be it love or gifts, advice or a hot meal. Her loving and caring nature and her ability to inspire and encourage affected the lives of countless people.
Prudy lived as if LIFE was the party, and every day should be celebrated. She hosted Maj Jong socials and her beloved Bridge games, Balderdash matches with her grandkids and PEO events...anything was a reason to make merry. She found inspiration in adventure, from water skiing to creating clubs like the bandana crew or traveling the world with friends. If you asked her to join you at any given time or place, her answer was always an unequivocal “YES.” A lifelong thirst for knowledge, Prudy lived to learn, be it painting, learning Spanish, playing the piano, Bible study, to name a few. She did it all with laughter in her voice and joy in her heart.
Prudy was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Charlotte Cain, and her brother Thomas George Cain.
She is survived by her three children Thomas (Blanca) Cain; Jennifer (Steve) Roth; James (Merritt) Cain; ten grandchildren: Nicholas Cain; Lindsey, Eric, and Michael Roth; Lacy Cain (Ian Baranack), Olivia Johnson (Kyle), Presley, Charlie, Ben, and Peyton Cain; and great-grandson Henry Johnson; brother Edward Cain, sister-in-law Patricia Cain; and twelve nieces and nephews.
