Mary Jo Stinnett, born on August 28th, 1909 in Havana, Cuba, passed away on November 13th, 2014 in the Villa Maria Care Center at the age of 105. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara S. Kaplan, and her grandson, Zachary S. Kaplan.
Possessed of a fiery spirit and a force of will unrivaled even in people half her age, Mary Jo never had any confusion about what direction she wanted her life to take, and she always made sure no one else had any confusion about it, either. One of her favorite personal anecdotes involved a conversation – and ardent disagreement – with a college-aged Fidel Castro while they were staying in the same boarding house.
Her authoritative demeanor and no-holds-barred attitude were much-beloved and defining characteristics, but were balanced by her bright smile and love of the beautiful and delicate. Most of her adult life was spent in the city of Tampa, Florida, until she followed her daughter, son-in-law and grandson to Tucson, Arizona in April of 2000.
A proud American and faithful Catholic, she paid as close attention to presidential campaigns as she did to Sunday mass. She was staunch in her beliefs, never doubtful of what was truly right. Family – especially her daughter and grandson – were always very important to her, and those she counted as friends found themselves in the company of a woman who was outspoken and powerful, yet wise and gentle.
She will forever be remembered in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched, and though her absence will be lamented, she has found her peace at last.
Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2:00 PM at East Lawn Palms Cemetery; 5801 East Grant Road.
