Lori Jean Giesler was born June 6, 1958 the same date as the start of the Normandy invasion to liberate Europe in 1945. Unlike the Allies, Lori was only responsible for the liberation of one soul in her life. I am the proud recipient of her love, devotion and caring heart for the last 38 years.
On May 7, 2016, Lori left us to join her parents, Jim and Sharon Gliesler, her Aunt Mary, Aunt Roberta (Burt), and our previous pets, Bear, Shadow, Jackalope, and Schatzi in the afterlife. She is survived by her brother, Robert Giesler of Tucson, Uncle Joseph Giesler, of Amarillo, Texas, Uncle Bill Moe of Red Wing, Minnesota, Sharon Fay Merrill, her daughter and Dallas Merrill, her husband.
Lori spent the first eighteen years of her life living in between Wabasha and Red Wing Minnesota. She joined the Army in 1979, completed Basic Training, Advanced individual Training, was assigned as a Home Town Recruiter and eventually was assigned to Fort Huachuca as an Administration Assistant.
I met Lori soon after her arrival to the post and we started a whirlwind romance that resulted in our getting married 6 months later. Many thought it would not last but 38 years later we were still together until her untimely passing on May 7, 2016.
Lori was challenged throughout her life both physically and mentally. She faced every challenge head on and displayed a strength and courage I can only hope to emulate. She was loving, caring and nurturing and would do anything for her family and friends. She could also be tough as nails and a strong disciplinarian. It is through all these traits that she saved my life. She saw though my tough guy demeanor and made me work through the issues that made me bitter and angry. Becoming a devoted husband, loving father and my wife’s best friend was from her kindness and understanding. I owe all that I am today to her. She was an extraordinary woman.
God received a special kind of angel on May 7, 2016. Sharon and I will miss her for the rest of our days.
