Joe is survived by three children – Jay (Lynn) Bileti, Anne (Tom) Johns and Lisa (John) Costa as well as four grandchildren, Trevor (Sarah) Johns, Nicki (Ben) Chappell, Stephanie and Allie Costa and three great grandchildren, Logan and Tyler Chappell and Michael Johns. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Terry, as well as his parents and 7 brothers and sisters.
Joe was born in Detroit, MI, attended Cooley High School and graduated from the University of Detroit Law School. He had a very successful career as a litigator in Michigan where, in addition to his legal work, he nurtured his passionate interests in amateur theater and playing golf. Never one to enjoy an endeavor without getting involved, he was a provocative leader in both of his hobbies.
He served on the board of directors at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville, MI, the Western Golf Association and Errol Estate Country Club in Apopka, FL. Joe developed the Green Coat Invitational at both Meadowbrook Country Club and Errol Estate Country Club, programs that continued on after his departure.
He performed in amateur theater where he won a number of awards for his acting and singing. Beside performing, he produced amateur shows at his country club and retirement home. To inspire young people in the theater he formed the Shenandoah Playhouse in a small theater he constructed in the basement of his Michigan home. He produced a number of shows including Babs Goes Dramatic, No More Homework and She’ll be Comin’ Round the Mountain.
Joe retired to Apopka, FL in 1996 and enjoyed a magnificent post-work life with his wife, Terry. Together, they traveled the world enjoying their passion – golf. Their travels included England, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Morocco, South Africa among others. In his “spare” time he fulfilled a life-long dream by authoring two books which were published – Senate Bill 4837 and Recall, a sequel.
He lived a faith-filled life, attending 33 religious retreats over 34 years, all at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith!
