James D. Wilson passed away on August 5, 2018, less than two weeks from his 96th birthday. James, a resident of Corona de Tucson, Arizona, was preceded in death by his loving wife, Beatrice Jean Wilson. The former Beatrice Jean Sniff of Saint Joseph, Michigan was the love of his life and they married in 1945. James was a loving father of four children. The children are Edith (James) Barber, Nancy (Jim) Gaines, James D. (Bunnie) Wilson, and Katherine (Don) Herrington. There are nine grandchildren numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews that loved him.
James, as part of America’s greatest generation, responded to his country’s call and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. This was the start of a military career that spanned 32 years in the United States Air Force, which sent him to numerous places within the United States and countries around the world. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and received numerous citations and awards during his military career. James received the Bronze Star, Distinguish Flying Cross, and Airman Medal with Three Clusters. Working on the flight lines, he saw his mission as providing for the safety of those flying the missions, and those on the ground, by making sure the planes were maintained in top condition. During his service to the country, James saw combat in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
James finished college following his military retirement achieving a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. He used his education to work with the Arizona State Compensation Fund to improve worker safety which was a driving passion for him. He attained the highly distinguished national designation of Certified Safety Professional while working at the State Compensation Fund and following his “second retirement” from the State, he was bestowed the designation of Certified Safety Professional Emeritus for the great body of work he had accomplished.
Retirement did not slow James down. As a resident of Corona de Tucson, he was an active participant in the formation of Post 109 of the American Legion. The Post and the people in the Post where near and dear to his heart. James served as Post Historian and considered this an honor and privilege. James and Beatrice were often seen at the Post’s many social get-togethers, enjoying the cherished friendships that had been developed.
James’ other activities included being an active hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and spent many days at his second home at Roosevelt Lake, where he and Beatrice would fish for crappie. They found much enjoyment in the regular gathering of friends and neighbors for a fish fry and pot luck.
James will be remembered as a caring and generous person that lived a full and good life.
A Memorial Service will be held at East Lawn Palms Mortuary on Thursday, August 9; at 12:30 PM.
