Hosea Cotton was born in Longview, Texas on January 26, 1931 to Estruss Cotton and Marie Cotton. He was the eldest son among five brothers and three sisters. In the early 1950s his family moved to Tucson, AZ and in December 1952 he married Elvester Cotton. To this union was born Lindsey, Robert, Loretta, David, Timothy, and Torey, Hosea and Elvester remained wed until Elvester entered eternal rest in November of 2006.
Hosea was baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist faith in the 1950s and was one of the co-founders of the Tucson Sharon SDA Church. Hosea served faithfully in various areas of the church and worked in the position of head Deacon for over 20 years. Hosea was one of the rich bass voices heard in the church choir and in the BelContos chorus. It was his privilege and practice for more than 30 years to open the church for prayer meetings and on Sabbath morning. On Sabbath mornings he would lead out song service. He’d say “Church began at 9:30, if you’re here at 9:30, you’re great, at 9:31, you’re late!” Hosea was recognized in the 2016 Regional Ministries Convocation as an Honoree for a Lifetime of Dedicated and Sacrificial Service. He dedicated his life to serve God and the church while working four, sometimes five jobs to ensure each of his children received a Christian education. In addition to his faithful service, Hosea worked for the City of Tucson and retired after over 30 years of service.
Hosea was a devout Christian and was diligent in sharing the Gospel of Christ. He used every opportunity possible to put a smile on your face and tell you about the love of Jesus. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, whistling and singing. Hosea was a craftsman with many trades including landscaping and mechanics. Hosea maintained the upkeep of the lawn at Sharon SDA Church for several decades. He was a friend to many and a stranger to no one.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Shirley Cotton; his children Lindsey Cotton (wife Linda Cotton), Loretta Cotton, Timothy Cotton (wife Jocelyn Cotton) and Torey Cotton; his brothers Travis Cotton, John Cotton and Albert Cotton; his sisters: Gwen, Margaret and Valley B ; his aunts Emma Lou, Bertheline and Dip; 12 grandchildren; over 20 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He understood that at the second coming of Christ, his life and the life of those he loved would be renewed. Now, Hosea waits on his savior’s glorious appearance.
