Gertrude Amy “Nani” Witter, 87 of Tucson, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 4, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry C. and Mildred F. (nee Deebach) Byers, her husband, John, and son, Joel. Gertrude “Nani” is survived by sons, John (Melissa), Jeffrey, and granddaughter, Grey, and also many loving friends and her church family.
Gertrude Amy “Nani” was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 17, 1931. On August 28, 1936 Nani and her mother sailed from Honolulu on the R.M.S. “AORANGI” to Vancouer, Victoria, British Columbia. From there they traveled to Watertown, Wisconsin, where Nani's Aunt Gertrude and her husband, Professor Erwin Kowalke were living. It was while living with her Aunt Gertrude and Uncle Erwin that Nani learned about Christ's love for her. She began kindergarten at St Mark,s Lutheran School.
On Sunday, October 31, 1937 Nani was made a forgiven child of God in baptism at St. Marks Ev. Lutheran Church, in Watertown, Wisconsin, baptized by her Uncle, Professor Kowalke. On Palm Sunday, April 14, 1946; Nani was confirmed at St Mark's with the Bible verse Isaiah 54:10.
After eighth grade graduation from St. Mark's, in 1946; Nani moved to Gresham, Oregon, where her mother lived. There she started High School, graduating in 1950 from Gresham High School. After graduation Nani went on to Beauty College.
In 1962 Nani arrived in Tucson, Arizona, where she soon met John Anthony Witter. Nani and John were married at Good Shepard Ev. Lutheran Church in 1968. Nani has been a faithful member of Grace Ev. Lutheran Church since the 1970's.
