When he was younger, he worked at the New Haven Register. While he and a friend were there one night, a fire broke out and the two of them put the fire out while they waited for the fire department to come. He also worked as a Police Officer in West Haven, CT. When he moved to Tucson, he worked for the Arizona Daily Star as an editor. After the newspaper, he went to work for Tucson International Airport as a Manager of Maintenance, which he retired from about 25 years ago.
He attended Catholic schools in his youth and went to college for a year at the University of Notre Dame.
Dennis collected coins and rare notes from the time he was a child. His favorite holidays were the 4th of July (which sparked his love of fireworks) and Halloween. He loved putting together bags of candy and toys for the 200-300 kids that trick or treated every year. He was a man that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He loved to joke and laugh. He never met a stranger and had a true love of life.
He is survived by his wife, Leona Dammling; a son, Dennis Jr of Hamden, CT; a daughter, Karrie Barney of Londonderry, NH; 4 Grandchildren-Cameron and Linsey Barney and Ty and Brady Dammling; his stepchildren, Lorin Watts of Stafford, VA; Clyde Watts of Tucson, AZ; Cruz Vega of Tucson, AZ; and Katy Hamdan of Tucson, AZ, and 9 grandchildren from those children.
He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
Services will be held at East Lawn Palms Mortuary and Cemetery (see service information below). At the family’s request, the funeral service will be live-streamed on the East Lawn Palms Facebook page, and will be available to view live at the time of service.
